Carrier Bag Fictions

9th September – 28th October 2023, Modern Painters New Decorators, Loughborough

'Carrier Bag Fictions' is an exhibition by Mateus Domingos featuring textiles, drawings and text inspired by Loughborough’s Luddite history. In the 19th Century, technology transformed the work of textile workers. The Luddites were a group of workers who resisted these changes through refusal, sabotage and threatening letters. The show's title is inspired by the writing of Ursula K. Le Guin, who redefined technology as a cultural carrier bag rather than a weapon of domination.

Show and Tell (5/10 8-10pm)

A short, fairly informal chat about networks and connections. I'll probably be thinking through some of the things I've tried to suggest in the exhibition work (re can we effectively resist/defend from within the zones of computation). I'm really excited that artist Sheila Ghelani will also be speaking, and really look forward to hearing more about her practice which has included lots of investigation of the enclosure acts, and the colonial history of England.

Ludd Walk (28/10 11-1pm)

We'll meet at Modern Painters before setting off through the town, passing historic sites. In the 19th Century, technology transformed the work of textile workers. The Luddites were a group of workers who resisted these changes through refusal, sabotage and threatening letters. Along the way, we'll talk about the Luddites, the conditions of workers, their strategies of resistance and our own use of technology today. The route will include textile factories, workshop buildings and the houses of factory owners, finishing up at Iceland, the site of an infamous Luddite attack. The walk will be around two miles and at a steady pace, with several resting points. The Ludd Walk will end at the Organ Grinder pub (historically known as The Old Pack Horse), where the Luddites may have gathered.
