Service Set
Service Set is a series of wifi access points scattered throughout the festival. Visitors are invited to scan the wifi networks to discover the hidden access points and the game contained within them. To complete the game visitors will need to piece together information by connecting to different access points.
This work continues my exploration of the D1 Mini, ESP8266 boards. Each one acts as an access point. The names of the networks are intended to act as a kind of poetry as they populate the list of available networks from a visitors device. They sit within the many other networks filling the space.
The idea developed in response to the festival theme of Liminality. As it is a games festival, I was also interested in layering some gameplay within this structure. So, there is a challenge of discovery of the networks and finding a specific character. Doing so allows the visitor to solve a riddle, which then leads them to a small dungeon crawler type interactive fiction.
These html that is served across these networks is always constructed from combinations of variables. It's clunky! Much more messy that using seperate files - but intentionally done as a way performing a more direct interaction with the code and the processes of the server.
